Open Source GIS

An interesting report on open source GIS is found here; it is written by Paul Ramsey, Director of Refractions Research (the company that made/makes PostGIS and GEOS). It discusses three groups of software: the C projects, the java projects and the web projects. Good reading; up-to-date (may 2006).

Open Source GIS software

There is some open source GIS software available.

  • Quantum GIS is a user friendly Open Source Geographic Information System (GIS) that runs on Linux, Unix, Mac OSX, and Windows.
  • OpenEV is a software library and application for viewing and analysing raster and vector geospatial data.
  • FWTools is a set of Open Source GIS binaries for Windows (win32) and Linux (x86 32bit) systems produced by Frank Warmerdam. OpenEV is included in FWTools.
  • GRASS GIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS) used for geospatial data management and analysis, image processing, graphics/maps production, spatial modeling, and visualization. It runs on Linux, Unix, Mac OSX, and MS-Windows; also note that PyWPS (Python Web Processing Service) is implementation of Web Processing Service standard from Open Geospatial Consortium that has been written with native support for GRASS
